Update: Baltimore Presbytery's Alliance with Interchurch Medical Assistance - World Health

Update: IMA ~ World Health’s link to Baltimore Presbytery.
The last article I had added to this web site regarding my embedded experiences in the communities of El Centro Presbytery is woefully in need of an update. In the four years that have lapsed between then and now I have had the wonderful opportunity to spend long stretches of time in Cuba, and have been privileged to visit all but one of the Presbyterian Church communities there: that being Calabazar de Sagua.
The 2009 Inter-Presbytery Conference
Written by John Walter Tuesday, 03 June 2008 01:07
Credit for the idea of an Inter-Presbytery conference goes to Sña Deb Milcarek, Baltimore Presbytery’s Associate for Mission and Justice, and Pastor Mairolet Vega Comas, who continued corresponding after the November 2007 Centennial celebration in Cabaiguán.
The date for the conference (or what the Cubans call, “un encuentro” an encounter”) has now been set to begin on Monday, the 9th of February 2009, and last a week. It will be hosted at the national camp, known there as CANIP, located in Santa Clara, Cuba.
Xiomara Arenas, the Secretaria General (Executive Presbyter) of El Centro has promised that all of its pastors will attend. That number will be augmented by the members of their presbytery’s Council. All in all, they hope to contribute the efforts of twenty people plus support. Baltimore Presbytery hopes to contribute an equal number, bringing the total conference attendance to some 50 to 60 people, a very compact, intimate, and manageable group.
Partnership Milestones: The Centennial Celebration

Cabaiguán, Cuba ~ November 2007
I sometimes think of partnerships as if they were organic structures in themselves; and like all living things, they have growth spurts at certain predestined junctures when energies synchronize around some event of common interest. Or perhaps we reach a plateau where critical mass in relationship building produces a needed expansion; either way, it feels like entering a completely new room populated by a recharged and larger group of people all interested in adding their voices and sharing some new horizons.
The Centennial in Cabaiguán was one such experience. Momentum began building a year in advance. The Cuban community in the United States was talking about it; the PCUSA presbyteries with partnerships with El Centro’s churches were planning visits; Baltimore Presbytery put together its largest delegation ever with thirteen people representing four churches and the Presbytery signing up to make the trip.

Welcome Light Street Presbyterian

The Cuba Partnership of Baltimore Presbytery welcomes Light Street Presbyterian Church to the Partnership.
Throughout these last five years, Mrs. Jo Ann Ruther, employed as secretary at Ashland Presbyterian Church, has aided and assisted me in every detail of trip planning for our outgoing Cuba delegations. She has navigated the murky waters of charter flights, quick change scheduling, the editing of our OFAC travel applications, accommodations for incoming Cuban delegations, and now: the currency issues.
Christmas 2002: Mission in Cabaiguán, Cuba
Written by John Walter Friday, 28 March 2008 20:12
After four years of hard work in Cabaiguán, the Presbyterian Church has been restored to its original condition. The people of Cabaiguán have taken notice and have begun to return to services.
Ashland Presbyterian Church (APC) began its Sister-Sister Church relationship with Iglesia Reformada Presbiteriana en Cabaiguán in 1999. Every year thereafter, members of APC have traveled to Cabaiguán to broaden our cultural understanding, deepen our trust, share prayer and worship and plan for a tomorrow in which God will unite His Kingdom here on Earth.
Christmas, 2002 was a very special visit in Cabaiguán. Guests from Ashland participated in all of the rehearsals for the Christmas pageant and spent time talking to the Session about their mission vision for Cabaiguán. We will help create the vision together, now that the church facility is restored
